Puppy Pointers paw

It could never be as hard as teaching ME to sit!

It's been a while since I've been a puppy, but I do remember being welcomed into my first home. They were so happy to get to know me and take care of me. Then came the hard part -- trying to train me. Ha! Well, I was probably a hard one to train, but they did a good job. Here are a couple of things that, I'll admit, worked pretty well on me.

  • It's never too early to start. I Know my attention span was short when I was young, but I started to catch on soon enough. Plus, I'd rather learn sooner than later. You know what they say, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
  • Be short and consistent. None of my people like long, boring meetings that don't get anywhere. And I get even more side traked than they do! Make a training session fun with some play and some training. Always be consistent or we can get confused. And remember to take it slow, mastering one command at a time. Otherwise I get all the words mixed up. It's like learning a new language. People words are so much harder than "woof!"
  • Who doesn't enjoy a compliment! Use a lot of encouragement and praise. Mmm... and rewards are always good. Sometimes we just need to know what we're doin' right.
  • Patience is key. You know, everyone's bound to make a mistake sooner or later, especially if we haven't been trained on it yet. Sometimes being punished just doesn't make sense to us if we're not doing something wrong at that moment. Wait until you catch us in the act.
  • Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. It takes a while to catch on to something new, so don't be surprised if it takes a couple of tires. And, we'll probably remember better if you work with us every day.
  • Test us out everywhere. We are more likely to learn quickly at home, but in new environments, so many more things can distract us. Test out our learning in new places and see how we do. Try training with more people or even other animals in the area. Hmm...like a dog park! Yea, yea...let's go to the park!

Since my people started working with me, I am more confident and happy. See, I turned out all right. Your new puppy looks up to you and would love to make you happy. Trust me...we live for praise and compliments and most of all, rewards treats!

Now, what did I hear about going to the park?

Wednesday Whiff: Fall paw

LEAVES!! My new favorite thing! Mmmm... and it's starting to smell like Fall!

Leaves

Autumn

by Ryan Larkin

Descending leaves fall to the ground,

Twirling, twisting, round and round,

Autumn season is almost here,

The smell of freshness is oh so near.

The crisp, cool breeze,

Shakes the leaves from the trees,

Autumn takes away the green,

Golden-bronze and brown is all that can be seen.

What is your favorite part of this season?

Taco Tragedy paw

Ugh...too many tacos on Tuesday! I guess I'm not very used to eating that kind of food. I better stop or I'll end up with something like acute diarrhea.

Taco Tragedy

Acute Diarrhea

Acute Diarrhea is a sudden diarrhea that may last from a few days to a few weeks. This conditions will cause your pets to suffer from frequent irritable bowel movements and soft, watery, or abnormal stools.

Symptoms:

  • Soft, loose stools
  • Bloody stools with mucus
  • Lethargy
  • Dehydration
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Decreased appetite

Causes:

Acute Diarrhea may result from many different situations. If the symptoms persist, it is best to bring your dog or cat to your veterinarian to figure out the underlying cause.

These are the main causes of Acute Diarrhea:

  • Licking or eating trash, nonfood material or spoiled food
  • Stress (traveling, showing, breeding, or an additional new pet)
  • Changes in food or diet
  • Bacterial infections
  • Drugs or toxic chemicals
  • Roundworms or other parasites
  • Secondary infection due to Parvovirus or Caronavirus

Progression:

Although Acute Diarrhea is usually a mild case of loose bowel movement, do not hesitate to bring your pet to the veterinarian for the proper treatment. It might just save you time and money, as well as save your carpets. If diarrhea goes untreated for many days, the dog or cat, especially if it is very young, may loose too much fluid. This may lead to more severe symptoms and dehydration, even death.

Meet My People! paw

Well, first of all, I'm a workin' dog. I'm at Van Beek Natural Science and they say that I'm their "inspiration." I'm not sure exactly what they all mean. Mostly, I just hang out at the office because they all like me here. So let me introduce my favorite people.

my people

First from my left paw is Ron. He's the one who started it all. Ron cares so much for us animals that making them feel better has become his business.

Next is Brett. He pretty much makes sure this place doesn't go to the dogs, if you know what I mean. Brett is in charge of a lot of stuff, but mostly marketing and all that. I like him because he is such a dog lover. His dog-kid is a Shih Tzu named Lilly. From what I hear, she is pretty much loved and spoiled rotten.

Then it is Alex. His official title is Director of Companion Animal Sales and Marketing, but to me he is just a pretty cool guy. Alex is not around here much because he is out there, either going to pet & vet shows or teaching people about the products they make here.

Anita follows Alex. She is such a nice lady...always calling me cute and givin' me love. She's the one who is always cooking up a new formula in the lab or field-testing out products.

Finally, Amanda is on the right. She is the one who helps me post my blog for you guys to read. Amanda likes to do all that website techy stuff while I'd rather just play. She just got a new puppy named Rosco. She says he looks just like me only he's black. I'm so very excited to meet him!

There are so many more cool people here at the office and I can't wait for you to meet them. But I'll have to introduce you later because...SQUIRREL! Must chase!
